F-1 students in active post-completion OPT (or within the grace period) who are the beneficiary of a timely-filed H-1B petition, filed by a cap-subject employer who is requesting a change of status and a start date of October 1, are eligible for a “cap-gap extension.�

The cap-gap extension extends your post-completion OPT until September 30. Note: If you are in your grace period, your F-1 status will be extended, but you are not permitted to work.
