G.L. Black
G.L. Black serves as Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, leading the University’s Student Affairs division in advancing a student-centered, integrated approach to student success, wellbeing, and community life in support of the University’s mission of teaching, research, and service. In this role, G.L. oversees Housing and Residential Experience; the Student Care Network; Student Accountability, Community Standards, and Academic Integrity; the Project Safe Center for Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response; Student Engagement and Leadership; and Belonging and Communities.
G.L. earned his B.A. from the University of Florida, his J.D. from Harvard Law School, and his M.Ed. from ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½¹Ù꿉۪s Peabody College. He began his career as a litigator at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in New York, where his practice focused on criminal defense and investigations, labor and employment, and antitrust matters. He later practiced at Shutts & Bowen LLP in Florida before joining Vanderbilt.
At Vanderbilt, G.L. has served as an Instructor of Law in the Legal Research and Writing Program at Vanderbilt Law School; Associate Director of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity; Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Office of Student Accountability, Community Standards, and Academic Integrity; Associate Dean of Students for Community Standards and Student Support; and Assistant Provost and Deputy Dean of Students, prior to his appointment as Vice Provost.
