This overcup oak was very significant in the early history of the university. It was mentioned as a landmark in the deed conveying the property to the new university. It was near Chancellor Garland&#8217;s house and he kept squirrel boxes in its branches. It&#8217;s location was near the present day Rand patio and the Overcup Oak pub in Rand is named after it. You can read its story in the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160702012410\/http:\/\/www.library.vanderbilt.edu\/speccol\/digcoll\/garlandoak.shtml\">Vanderbilt Alumnus Magazine vol. 2 no. 5 (March 1917) p. 131<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/bioimages.vanderbilt.edu\/vanderbilt\/h001.htm\"><img title=\"old bur oak\" src=\"http:\/\/bioimages.vanderbilt.edu\/lq\/vanderbilt\/wconkin-p-69-campus-from-kirkland-tower.jpg\" alt=\"old bur oak\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>The old bur oak<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sprouted before 1800 &#8211; died June 18, 1989. This oak was next to the original farm house on Vanderbilt&#8217;s campus (&#8220;Old Central&#8221;). It was clearly visible in early photos of the campus and was one of the few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/trees\/original-trees-of-vanderbilt\/\">trees that predated the university<\/a>. This giant grew in the Divinity School courtyard. You can read about it in <a href=\"ofvanderbilt\/033\">The Trees of Vanderbilt p. 33<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/trees\/september-elm\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"144\" height=\"196\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-107\" title=\"champion September elm\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/237\/2018\/03\/19221913\/september-elm.jpg\" alt=\"champion September elm\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>The national champion September elm<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Died between 1995-2005. This tree was the arboretum&#8217;s only national champion tree. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/trees\/september-elm\/\">Read about it and its up-and-coming successor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/trees\/how-old-are-trees-in-the-vanderbilt-arboretum\/#sentinels\"><img title=\"library sentinel\" src=\"http:\/\/bioimages.vanderbilt.edu\/lq\/baskauf\/wquim--wplarge11129.jpg\" alt=\"library sentinel\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>A library sentinel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sprouted c. 1880 &#8211; died in May 2013. Shingle oak 2-609 stood along 21st Avenue for over a hundred years until one fateful day before commencement in 2013. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/trees\/how-old-are-trees-in-the-vanderbilt-arboretum\/#sentinels\">Trace it&#8217;s history back through time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/trees\/deer-head\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"144\" height=\"142\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-104\" title=\"deer head tree\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/237\/2018\/03\/19221913\/deer-head.jpg\" alt=\"deer head tree\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Peabody&#8217;s deer head tree<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Died in 1990. This strange tree was a Peabody landmark until it became too sick and had to be cut down.
