Developing the Next Generation of Electronic and Photonic Technologies
Electronic and photonic devices are central to how we sense, communicate, compute, and interact with the world. VINSE researchers leverage advanced design, fabrication, characterization, and measurement capabilities to investigate nanoscale materials, interfaces, and structures, and translate fundamental discoveries into new device technologies.
Multidisciplinary engineering at the nanoscale enables researchers to explore electronic transport, light-matter interactions, and the coupling of electrical and optical phenomena in emerging materials and nanostructures. Research spans metasurfaces, plasmonics, photonic crystals, integrated photonics, infrared optics, high power and high frequency devices, thermal management of nanoelectronic devices, and heterogeneous integration. By connecting material and structural properties with mechanisms of device operation, VINSE researchers are advancing smaller, faster, lower-power, and more capable technologies for applications in communications, computing, energy, medicine, sensing, space, and national security.
